The Gap Community Hub Petition

The Gap is home to over 17,000 people but suffers from a chronic lack of crucial community infrastructure, like a library and community meeting space. For many Gap residents a trip to the nearest library in Ashgrove – a relatively small local library – takes 30 minutes or more by bus.

Meanwhile, The Gap lacks a dedicated community centre, meeting spaces, and indoor play and recreation spaces for young children and teenagers. The Brisbane City Council has neglected the needs of locals in The Gap, while giving huge tax cuts to property developers.

The Brisbane City Council should commit to funding the establishment of a public library and community hub in The Gap. The potential site for the hub should come after extensive public consultation, but many locals have suggested a location at The Gap Village.

You shouldn’t have to drive out of your suburbs for essential community facilities like libraries and meeting spaces. If we’re going to build thriving, integrated communities, locals need community hubs that are a quick walk, ride or drive away.
